He studied Fine Art at Belfast College of Art, and had among his tutors John Luke and Tom Carr.
In 1968, he graduated and spent several years teaching Art and Design at a Belfast boys’ school,where he became Head of Dept. in 1975. In 1982, he began to paint seriously again and in 1987 gave up teaching in order to pursue his art more fully, becoming one of Ireland’s best known figurative painters.
His work is always characterised by skilled draughtmanship, warmth and softness of brushstroke with a sensitive portrayal of subject depth of contrast. The early work was mainly landscape, developing into the portrayal of a variety of subjects; people at work, fairs and markets, children at play, traditional
musicians and dancers.
Three years ago, Rowland moved from Belfast to Co.Down. This inspired a new direction in his work and recently he felt a desire and an excitement to exchange direct representation for a more loose, abstracted style with a strong evocative quality, emphasing the pleasure of the paint as well as the importance of the subject matter.
A visit to U.S.A. gave him the opportunity to see the work of Larry Rivers, an artist whose work he has long appreciated, and he, together with Frank Auerbach and Pierre Bonnard have become the main inspiration for this recent body of work, very different in many ways from the former work, yet retaining the figurative element so important to Davidson.

Lewis says, “We sit down before a picture in order to have something done to us, not that we may do things with it. The first demand any work of
art makes upon us is,’Surrender. Look. Listen. Receive’.’”” |
