Back to Artists
Geraldine O'Sullivan, a native of West Cork, graduated from the National College of Art and Design with a First Class Honours Diploma in 1981. She now lives and paints from her studio in Ballylibert, Castlefreke, West Cork.

Geraldine is an artist whose work is continually evolving. Her techniques include mixing acrylic and pastel, scratching and layering paint, all in the search to create distinct images.

Geraldine tries to capture in her paintings a sense of place that is unique to West Cork. In her work we find the many greens of the land, the ochre and red of the earth, the deep colours of storming seas, the blue black of the bog pools, full of emotion and memory. Her familiarity with each location instils one with a "Sense of Place and Belonging".

On the Collage Work:

The new collage work features the ordinary and extraordianary, in a mix that Geraldine calls the Pentimento Collection: so called because of the layering of paint and paper in each work, which ages the image and allows the viewer to enjoy the gradual exposing of mementos of memory.

The word pentimento is derived from the Italian pentirsi, which means to repent or change your mind. Pentimento is a change made by the artist during the process of painting.

These changes are usually hidden beneath a subsequent paint layer. In some instances they become visible because the paint layer above has become transparent with time.
